Insights from Invasive Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing by David Systrom, MD, Harvard Collaboration

Dr. David Systrom, pulmonary physician at Brigham & Women’s Hospital and investigator at Massachusetts General Hospital in association with the Harvard ME / CFS Collaboration, has recently published, “Insights from Invasive Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing of Patients with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome,” in CHEST Journal. This research is proudly funded in part by Open Medicine Foundation (OMF).

The research was conducted to answer the research question: Can invasive cardiopulmonary exercise testing (iCPET) and lower-leg skin biopsies inform the pathophysiology of ME/CFS exertional intolerance and potential relationships with small fiber neuropathy (SFN)?

The results of the study identify two types of peripheral neurovascular dysregulation that are plausible contributors to ME/CFS exertional intolerance and impaired peripheral oxygen extraction.
