Placebo Effect

The image shows two blue and teal capsules resting on a large, glossy pill-shaped object divided into blue and green halves. The word "PLACEBO" is written in bold white letters across the large pill.

The placebo effect is when a person experiences a health improvement from a treatment that was designed to have no therapeutic benefit (a placebo). Placebos are often made to mimic the look of a therapeutic treatment (e.g., a pill of the same size and color), and are used as a control in randomized clinical trials testing the efficacy of the therapeutic treatment.

In ME/CFS, like other conditions, it’s important to demonstrate that a treatment provides more health improvement than a placebo before it can be approved for use. OMF’s Life Improvement Trial (LIFT) is therefore a placebo-controlled clinical trial. This means that the treatments being tested, low-dose naltrexone (LDN) and pyridostigmine, are compared to placebos.
