Orexin is a peptide in the brain that is a major regulator of sleep/wake cycles. When its levels are abnormal, it can have notable impacts on a person’s health. Low levels of orexin, for example, are associated with excessive daytime sleepiness. High levels may be connected to increased stress.
Given that non-restorative sleep is an important symptom of ME/CFS and related conditions like Long COVID, it is hypothesized that orexin may be disrupted in these diseases. OMF is investigating sleep disturbance in a few different ways, including in a sleep study at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. This sleep study will specifically analyze orexin levels in the cerebrospinal fluid of participants with ME/CFS and Long COVID, and health controls.
